Web Page Assignment Instruction Sheet
In order to best complete your Web Page Project, please follow the following instructions:
If you will use the school's computers, or if you already installed Mozilla on your own computer, then jump to step #2.
1. Install Mozilla on your computer. Follow the instructions on the HTML web site.
2. Check the Preferences for Mozilla/Composer, and make sure they are correct (see the HTML web site).
3. Make sure that filename extensions are NOT HIDDEN on your computer (see the Windows web site).
Repeat steps #2 and #3 every time you use a new computer!
4. Decide a working location for your web site; for example, on a USB Flash disk, or on your home computer's hard drive.
5. Create a new folder for your project. Give it your full name plus the word “project,” lowercase, with a “_” between the names (e.g., “taro_suzuki_project”). ALL YOUR FILES MUST GO INTO THIS FOLDER. Do not create more folders inside this folder.
Always make sure you are saving files in the correct folder! It is easy to get confused.
6. Use Mozilla to find images for your web site. Do not use Internet Explorer (it sometimes changes the images into bmp files). ONLY USE IMAGES WITH THE jpg OR gif EXTENSIONS. Do NOT use bmp or png files!
7. Make sure the images are saved INSIDE the folder you made!
8. Double-check the filenames of the images. Make sure they follow the rules for web site filenames (all lowercase, no symbols or spaces). Change any filename which is wrong. You may also change filenames to make them simpler. MAKE ALL CHANGES BEFORE YOU INSERT AN IMAGE INTO A WEB PAGE.
9. Make sure ALL the photos are smaller than 100 KB. If any photo is bigger than that, see Mr. Poza about making it smaller.
You can add more images to the folder later on, but follow the same steps #6 ~ 9.
10. Open Mozilla, and then go to Composer.
11. With a blank Composer page, SAVE THE BLANK PAGE IN THE FOLDER YOU MADE. First, give it any Title that you want, but then make sure the filename is index.html for the first web page.
12. Begin creating and editing your web page.
13. Do not make a link to the second web page until you have created the second web page!
14. When you are ready to create a new web page, open a new Composer document and immediately save the blank page like you did before. This time, you can create any name you like, if it follows the rules for web site filenames.
15. Follow the instructions for the web page project. READ THE ASSIGNMENT CAREFULLY! Make sure you include everything listed in the assignment.
After you finish creating your web pages, please check the following items:
1. Make sure all the files are located in the folder you made. You should have at least two “html” files and several images.
2. If there are any web pages or images you did NOT use in the project, DELETE THEM! You should not have extra, unused images in the folder.
3. Double-check all the filenames (web pages and images) to make sure they follow web site filename rules.
4. Double-check all images to make sure they are smaller than 100 KB.
Before doing the next steps, transfer the web page project folder ONLY to a new computer.
5. Open the web pages, and make sure the links all work. Also make sure that the images all appear.
6. Check the HTML source in your web pages. Make sure there are no filenames that begin with “file:///…” If you find any, then fix them.
If you have any questions, please ask Mr. Poza for help!
The project is due on the day of the final exam, at the BEGINNING of the class time.
Save your project folder (“taro_suzuki_project”) in the folder on the server where you also saved your PowerPoint project.
